De quoi parles-tu? is a supplementary oral communication resource designed for secondary school Core French students.

The Cards
The simplest cards are Niveau 1 (cards with the fish icon). They can be used for Grade 9/10 students, as well as for students in Grades 11/12 whose proficiency in oral communication is below grade level.

The intermediate cards are Niveau 2 (cards with the lizard icon). They can be used for Grade 10/11 students, as well as for students in Grades 12 whose proficiency in oral communication is below grade level.

The most challenging cards are Niveau 3 (cards with the mouse icon). These have been created for Grade 12 students or students in younger grades whose proficiency in oral communication is above level.

The Teacher Guide includes:
- Suggestions to help students develop good strategies and speaking skills
- Extensive notes on using the cards in class
- Student checklists appropriate for Assessment for Learning and Assessment as Learning
- Assessment suggestions for the teacher
The Teacher Guide also contains a section of extensive notes in a handwritten font that are designed to simulate the steps that students follow as they prepare their oral presentations. They serve as a model for students as they plan and create their oral presentations.
The Student Checklists
The Student Checklists are an essential component of the resource. These checklists are the strategies that students use as they prepare their oral tasks. By following these step-by-step guides carefully, students are led to present oral communication tasks in a way that makes them look and feel spontaneous.
The Student Checklists contain specific strategies that can be used at different points of presentation planning and execution. They are divided into Before, During, and After strategies and are easy for students to follow.

As teachers, we know that students enjoy the creative opportunity that oral presentations provide. They like to sit together, allow their imaginations to run wild, create characters for their scenes or events, and discuss props, signs, costumes, music and sound effects to add interest to their presentations. They make connections between the task and their world by picturing themselves and their friends in certain situations. The classroom is usually abuzz with positive noise and activity as students prepare together. Rarely are there students who sit alone or appear to have nothing to do. Why all this fuss? Because students love to talk and they want to be able to talk in French.
However, there is often a great divide between the spoken French that students visualize themselves doing outside the classroom, and the spokenFrench that actually happens in the classroom.
De quoi parles-tu? is designed to train students to create oral exchanges in a way that mimics spontaneous speech by having them concentrate on the strategies they need for a speaking situation, rather than worrying about the words they write on a sheet of paper. De quoi parles-tu? promotes a different methodology designed to bring out the relaxed nature of unplanned oral exchanges. What is the secret? It’s simple: students learn communication strategies to help them create what appear to be impromptu oral presentations.
With your support and guidance, students can learn to create authentic oral tasks that reflect reality outside the classroom and they can become confident in their abilities to apply their knowledge outside the classroom. Is this not the goal of all French as a Second Language educators and students?
